Essential Tips for Winterizing Your HVAC System

Every homeowner knows–or should know–that proper maintenance is key to prolonging the life of heating and cooling systems. When temperatures drop below freezing, the last thing you want is to discover a problem with your furnace or heater that could’ve been addressed a lot sooner.

In this blog, a trusted heating and air conditioning repair service technician shares essential tips for getting your HVAC system ready for winter.

Change the filters. When it comes to maintaining your HVAC system, the first order of business is to replace your air filters. Air filters reduce airborne contaminants by trapping dust, dirt and other particles present in the air. If you leave it in place for far too long, it will force your system to work harder to force air through the blocked filter. This will put unnecessary strain on your furnace and drive up your utility bills in the long run. Generally, filters should be replaced every one to three months.

Clean the registers. Dust builds up along the openings of registers and air returns throughout the year. If left unchecked for extended periods, it can force allergens into the air you’re breathing. To clean these vents, simply remove the grill and wipe it down thoroughly. Then, proceed to clean the interior of the vents. HVAC installation contractors say this will help eliminate the contaminants in the air as well as allow for uninterrupted airflow.

Cover the outdoor unit. Don’t forget to take care of your air conditioning system. Before the first snowstorm hits, make sure the outdoor unit is properly covered and protected from the elements. Leave a foot of the coil exposed to prevent moisture from getting trapped under the cover and providing an environment for mold to grow.
