How to Get Fresh Air Into Your Home

Ventilate Before 10 AM Or After 9 PM

There are certain times when outdoor air is actually less polluted, so make sure you open your windows to maximize ventilation before 10 AM or after 9 PM, unless your windows face the street. According to studies, indoor air can sometimes actually be more polluted than outdoor air, , so you don’t need to worry as much about air pollution outside when you’re ventilating at certain times.

Open Your Window for 15 Minutes

Fifteen minutes may not sound like much, but it’s actually plenty of time to ventilate any room in your home while still keeping it cooled. Most professional HVAC installation contractors also recommend prioritizing windows in bathrooms and kitchens, as well as bedrooms. Doing so will cool the indoor air for a few minutes before heat returns to the room again. 

Install an HRV

If you want to have a continuous supply of fresh air inside your home, consider installing a complete heat recovery ventilation system (HRV). 

this consists of a heat exchanger inside a cabinet and two blowers, one incoming and one outgoing. It has its own duct system that draws in stale indoor air–usually from bathrooms and the kitchen. The incoming ducts for fresh air often lead to the living room or hallway. 

With this system, you’ll increase your efficiency rate and save up to 75 percent of energy consumption. This is especially useful during the summer since the cold, stale outgoing air pre-cools the incoming hot, fresh outdoor air.
