Proper HVAC Replacement Timing

An HVAC system is a huge component of the American home. Hot summers and freezing winters are difficult — if not impossible — to live through without a cooling or heating system, respectively. However, an HVAC system is a particularly sizeable investment, so it’s always best to take good care of it so it lasts at least as long as expected (usually 12-20 years), but preferably even longer.

If you’re living in your forever home, there will come a time when maintenance and repairs will reach their limits, and you’ll need HVAC installation contractors to install a new unit.

When is the best time to buy a new HVAC system? Here are some tips.

Shop in the Off-Season

HVAC manufacturers and sellers often offer discounts during peak seasons because home and business owners need cooling systems at the start of summer and heating systems at the start of winter. But these times are also their busiest for servicing and selling units. During off-seasons, fewer people are buying, so the discounts may be more significant. Plus, providers of residential HVAC services usually have more open schedules.

Shop for a Renovation

If you have a home improvement or renovation project on your calendar, consider shopping around for a new HVAC unit as well. A significant home renovation means workers will be at your home for some time, so if an HVAC replacement is needed this is the perfect time to have a new unit installed. If the project is disruptive enough, you might even want to make plans to move for the time being.

This is a great time to replace that HVAC unit so you don’t have to deal with a second disruptive project in the near future. Plus, if the renovation involves areas of the home where ductwork is present, it’s an opportunity to repair or replace old ducts.

Shop if Problems Persist

Are you on the phone with a repair technician practically every week or every month? If so, your HVAC system is probably costing you more over the long term than a new unit would. If that’s the case, consider buying a new HVAC system instead of putting up with constant repairs.
