What Causes High Humidity Even When the Air Conditioner Is Running?

Many people aren’t aware of it, but dehumidification occurs as a functioning air conditioning system cools. This may sound concerning, but it’s actually completely normal. However, homeowners must be reminded that when an AC is no longer working effectively, the humidity is sure to rise to uncomfortable levels. HVAC installation contractors say this is the cause of inadequate cooling or hot spots. A-1 Comfort Care shares the common causes of this dilemma and how to address it below.

The Common Causes

  1. Like most appliances and home features, if your HVAC system isn’t being cleaned properly on a regular basis, it can easily accumulate dust and dirt. Remember that even if the air filter is near the handler, your unit’s components will still get dirty over time. This is why you have to check your unit’s condenser coils, as they’re subject to the elements and can easily get dirty.
  2. Most experts on air conditioning repair services note that there are certain daily activities that will increase your home’s humidity. Using the bathroom contributes to high humidity levels, especially when you take hot baths and showers. Another example is cooking, due to the evaporated water released upon using the kitchen stove and oven. This is the primary reason why the use of ventilation fans in the kitchen and bathrooms is advised.

Addressing The Problem

Homeowners must be mindful that if they neglect prioritizing maintenance, dirt can easily disrupt the refrigerant cycle. This obviously affects your system’s dehumidification ability. You may consider having a whole-home dehumidifier integrated with your air conditioning system. More importantly, you’re urged to call and hire a trained expert to have your units checked, or better yet, cleaned and fixed.
