Daily Water Consumption: Addressing Leaks Can Save You Money

Understanding how your household consumes water has many long-term benefits. In addition to avoiding wasting water, it also helps you make informed decisions about upgrades and even save on your annual utility costs. As your local plumbing services provider, A-1 Comfort Care Heating, Cooling and Plumbing shares an overview of how the average household consumes water.

Average Daily Water Consumption

According to a study conducted in 2016, the average American household uses about 88 gallons of water a day, per person. Which means if one household is occupied by a family of four, the usage would be about 10,560 gallons in a 30-day period. The usage is divided into the following:

  • 30% – Outdoor use, including irrigation for plants and washing windows and siding

  • 19% – Toilets

  • 15% – Indoor washing, including clothes and dishes

  • 12% – Bathing, including showers and bathtubs

  • 11% – Faucets, including bathroom and kitchen

  • 9% – Leaks

  • 4% – Other

Usage varies depending on the region. For example, people in dry regions tend to use more water on their plants and for cleaning outdoor areas exposed to dust.

How We Can Help

What is worrisome is that 9% of water consumption is lost on leaks. It may sound like a small percentage, but you should consider that it adds up to a month’s worth of water consumption every 11 months if the leak remains unaddressed. You must hire a plumbing company like us to repair the damage and stop water waste.

In addition to conducting plumbing installation, repair and maintenance, we can make upgrade recommendations, such as water-efficient toilets, and make sure they will work with your existing plumbing. Homeowners tend to overlook these details, but working with experts like us can help you rest easy knowing wasted water is going to be one less thing worry that you have.
